Supporters trust vows to fight for Vics' future (From Northwich Guardian)

Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust says it is taking practical, positive steps to preserve the club's future

A FANS group says it is working flat out to preserve their favourite club’s future.

In a statement issued to the Guardian , Northwich Victoria Supporters Trust chairman Paul Stockton said the body’s board members had been busy in recent weeks.

Vics start life at a lower level this Saturday when they host an Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Division One South match at Stafford Rangers’ Marston Road home.

Stamford are the visitors.

The trust’s statement reads:

“DAYS away from the start of a new season, we find ourselves looking back over a disappointing summer during which the significant events for Northwich Victoria have again concerned matters off the pitch rather than on it.

“The continuing legal battle over finances and an appeal about the location of our ‘home’ ground have been played out publicly, thus sullying the once proud reputation of our club even further.

“In addition, the team will be required to play home games at Stafford, a round trip of more than 80 miles for most supporters.

“Puzzlingly, the club has also signed a three-years lease to play at Flixton.

“The team will compete in the lowest league in the club’s history with a team devoid of all the players that provided us with so much enjoyment last season.

“This is a huge shame, and I am sure that all supporters will join us in thanking them for their fantastic effort while wearing a green shirt.

“The current state of the club, coupled with the fact that there is no indication from the owner as to when – and how – it will return to Northwich, is distressing for many fans.

“The trust board shares supporters’ concerns and is working hard on a number of fronts to improve the situation in line with the objectives set out in a business plan approved by members in May.

“Over the next few months the trust will build on its relationship with clubs such as Scarborough Athletic, Enfield Town and Runcorn Linnets to learn from their experience in overcoming similar problems to those faced by Vics.

“These are comparable examples of clubs successfully coming out on the other side.

“It has also been encouraging to hear the genuine level of dismay about Vics’ current plight from supporters across the whole of non-league.

“The trust board will also continue to work closely with Supporters Direct, using their knowledge, resources and advice to help find solutions to the serious problems the club faces.

“Many trust members have already volunteered to assist us, and their knowledge and skills will provide us with valuable support as and when we may need it.

“On this subject, the trust is delighted to announce that well-known supporter Paul Ashley has been co-opted to the board, which is positive and excellent news.

“In response to a request made at our recent annual meeting, the trust has also set up a social and fundraising subcommittee.

“One of its aims is to organise regular events to provide an opportunity for fans to meet, chat and most of all have fun together again.

“These occasions will be open to all, and we are pleased to announce the first will be held at Lostock Social Club on Thursday, September 27.

“One idea already put forward by the committee’s members is to organise volunteers to undertake cleanup operations in the town and surrounding area.

“In this way, we can demonstrate that the trust and supporters are determined to put the name of Northwich Victoria in a better light by helping the community in a practical way.

“The trust board has also been made aware of some of the difficulties now being faced by Northwich Victoria’s junior teams following the loss of the Victoria Stadium.

“We consider the development of young footballers in Northwich area a vitally important part of the trust’s community role and we will be offering help where we can.

“Finally, the trust will continue to provide its long-standing and popular away travel service for all fans, starting with the game at Sutton Coldfield next Tuesday, August 21.

“Details of the arrangements will appear on the trust’s website.

“In summary, we realise that the club’s current position and its uncertain future is causing a great deal of consternation for many Vics fans and trust members. 

“The board fully understands these feelings and will continue to do everything within our power to ensure the long-term future of our unique club.”
