Witton Albion captain Anthony Sheehan says pre-season has been a success so far

Witton Albion captain Anthony Sheehan. Witton Albion captain Anthony Sheehan.

ANTHONY Sheehan says Witton are almost ready for next week’s campaign curtain-raiser.

Albion play their final pre-season practice match at Football Conference club Vauxhall Motors tomorrow, Saturday, with the skipper positive about progress so far.

“It’s been good,” he said.

“I don’t think we’re all quite there yet in terms of fitness or match sharpness, but we feel better after each match.”

The 29-year-old returned to duty after a holiday in Albion’s defeat at Trafford last week, completing 90 minutes for the first time in a 3-1 win at Ramsbottom on Saturday.

Witton start life back in the Premier Division at home to Blyth Spartans next weekend.

Sheehan said: “We’ll be firing on all cylinders by then.

“It’s been a bit messy because lads have been on holiday or unavailable, but now that everybody is back then we’ve been able to make progress more quickly.

“Friendlies are rarely representative of where everybody is at, it’s more about getting the new lads up to speed with how we play and getting ourselves fit.

“In that respect, it’s been a successful pre-season.”

Cheshire neighbours Vauxhall, who could include former Witton front man Tom Rutter in their starting line-up, came from behind to beat Northwich Victoria in midweek.

Witton ran out comfortable 4-0 winners at home to Newcastle Town the same night.
