Northwich Victoria take over as leaders following Ashton United's draw

NORTHWICH Victoria moved to the top of the table for the first time this season after beating Whitby Town, writes Phil Bradley.

Andy Preece’s men lost their 100 per cent record at neighbours Nantwich Town on Bank Holiday Monday, but bounced back against Blues.

Still to concede a goal this season are Ashton United, but it is not enough to keep them at the standings’ summit.

Their latest shut out, at Stocksbridge Park Steels, is their fifth in succession.

On Monday they had ended FC United of Manchester’s perfect start thanks to Lee Steele’s winner.

In third place are Worksop Town, twice scored three goals in the space of five days only to drop points in a home draw with Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday.

Kevin Sanasy’s last-minute penalty earned Simon Collins’ men a share of the spoils.

Earlier in the week Worksop had beaten groundshare hosts Retford United.

Buxton extended their winning streak to three matches after picking up maximum points from meetings with Marine and then Nantwich.

Elsewhere Kendal Town were surprisingly beaten at home by Burscough on Monday only to bounce back with a single-goal success at Chasetown.

Ashton aside, the only other unbeaten team five games in to the season are Ossett Town, who have drawn four times.

Their sole success was in their Bank Holiday derby date at Bradford.

Following wins for Nantwich and Mickleover Sports on Monday, the only side still searching for a first success of the campaign in the Northern Premier League’s top tier are Frickley Athletic.
