Manweb edge close encounter against Mid-Cheshire League title rivals Lostock

A PAIR of top of the table clashes were the pick of this week’s action in the Mid-Cheshire League, writes Keith Mitchell.

Manweb inflicted a first defeat on Lostock in Super Sixes Division One, edging a narrow 6-4 win to open up a two-points lead at the summit.

Dave Nelson and John Perry won two rubbers apiece for the home side, while Charlie Ostapski adding a straight-sets win over Andy Town.

The doubles proved crucial though as Nelson and Perry went the distance against Geoff Cummings, who had won each of his singles encounters, and Tony Turner before running out 14-12 victors in a fifth set.

Lostock’s second and third teams shared the spoils after drawing for the second time this term, leaving them tied on points at the top of Division Two.

Geoff Mee led the charge for the former, winning all three of his matches, while Joe Phillips and Eric Baker both defeated Dave Myles.

For the thirds, Tom Beevers and Neil Proudlove won two each before teaming up to take the doubles.

The league hosts its annual Junior Championships at Lostock Youth Club on Sunday week, March 7, from 10am.

There are competitions for U18s and U14s.

“The aim is to simply encourage young players to pick up a bat and have a go,” said tournament organiser Tony Turner.
