WAYNE Goodison has promised 1874 Northwich will continue to improve after the club celebrated one of the best wins in their short history on Tuesday.

They progressed the FA Cup second qualifying round for the first time, where they will meet opponents ranked three levels higher, following a 2-0 victory against Mossley in a replay.

And the co-manager has tipped a young side to get better after seeing off the Lilywhites with an assured display.

“From start to finish, and man for man, we had more about us,” he reflected.

“Our lads played with more purpose; they’re playing with confidence, and believe in each other.

“More than that, they’re learning together and that’s what’s taken us on this run we’re on.

“It’s great for the club and brilliant for our fans – they’ve seen us beat a team from the league above and do so comfortably.”

Their reward is to host North Ferriby United, from the National League North, in a tie that has been scheduled for Sunday week, September 17.

1874 have now played six matches in the FA Cup this season, progressing at each stage after a replay.

Scott McGowan was their star turn on Tuesday, scoring twice before the break to leave Mossley playing catch-up.

They barely looked likely to do so.

Goodison added: “Scoring early was important.

“Mossley had been really successful in stopping us from playing in the first 20 minutes of Saturday’s game.

“I felt if we got the first goal, then we could go on to win because they wouldn’t react to going behind like we had done.

“That’s how it played out, and we were fairly comfortable by the end.

“Even if we hadn’t have scored again before half-time, I still felt confident we’d hurt them no matter what they threw at us.”

He saved praise for in-form McGowan, who has scored eight goals in as many appearances this season.

The former Congleton striker, who returned to St Luke’s Barton Stadium after Goodison and Paul Bowyer were placed in caretaker charge following Ian Street’s departure in March, is playing as well as ever.

Goodison: “We believe in him, and he knows that the way we set up will give him chances to score.

“And he’s thriving as a result; his attitude is fantastic as well.

“We know he could be this player and that’s why he was one of the first people we called when we took over.”
