1874 NORTHWICH and landlords Winsford United have agreed to rename their home ground to raise awareness of a neighbouring charity.

They will host opponents at St Luke’s Barton Stadium as part of an initiative to support the hospice based at nearby Grosvenor House on Queensway.

A new sign has already been attached to the entrance at the football ground.

“We’re so excited to announce this new partnership,” said Angela Slack, community fundraising manager at St Luke’s.

“It’s a real opportunity for us to reach local people and promote our message to them.”

1874 have confirmed St Luke’s Cheshire Hospice as their charity partner for the next two years.

A raffle before last Saturday’s home fixture with Atherton Collieries, with a specially commissioned cake marking the fourth anniversary of the club’s foundation, was the main prize.

It raised more than £220.

1874 and Winsford have also planned collect donations to St Luke’s when they play each other in North West Counties League Premier Division matches this season.

“St Luke’s is a fine charity and we want to do everything possible to help them,” said Bob Astles, Winsford United’s secretary.

“We gave it some thought before agreeing to rename the ground, and asked the Barton family if they were ok with it.”

The arrangement has been made possible thanks to Thor Specialities (UK) securing naming rights to Blues’ home.

The chemicals manufacturer has also paid for new waterproof covers, which arrived this week, for the playing surface.
