LEADING scorer Matthew Beadle has departed 1874 Northwich after agreeing to sign for newly-crowned North West Counties League champions Colne.

Reds, who will play at a higher level next season following their promotion to the Northern Premier League, announced the 27-year-old’s arrival on Sunday afternoon.

He leaves Barton Stadium after finding the net 62 times in the past two seasons.

“It’s been a difficult decision because I’ve enjoyed my time here,” he said.

“But like most players, I’d like to test myself further up the pyramid and Colne have offered me an opportunity to do that.

“They’re a good club, and this move feels right for me at this stage of my career.”

Beadle scored 34 goals last term, persuading his teammates and also 1874’s supporters to pick him as their player of the season.

Meanwhile his tally had reached 28 by the end of his debut campaign at the club following a switch from Premier Division rivals Maine Road.

Beadle added: “I want to thank Ian Street and his management team for giving me a chance to play for 1874.

“The fans have been fantastic towards me; it’s a special club.”

Following the retirement of Mike Brandon, Street needs to replace players who between them scored more than 50 goals for 1874 last season.

In a statement confirming Beadle’s exit, the club said: “Since the end of last season, Matty has held talks with manager Ian Street.

“The news is not a surprise, nor does it alter his plans.”
