IAN Street described his side’s display in their opener as disappointing despite collecting maximum points.

1874 Northwich began a second season in the North West Counties League’s top flight by beating Squires Gate, scoring both their goals before the break.

They wilted in the heat afterwards though.

“Maybe the players thought the job was done – I don’t know,” said Street.

“There could be a million and one excuses, but they’re in no doubt I wasn’t happy.

“We totally switched off. I know we’ve won, but we have to do better.

“I can’t accept performances like the one in the second half. It doesn’t matter if it’s the first game, I don’t really care about that.”

Asked what were the most positive parts of the hosts’ first-half showing, which was rewarded with goals for Danny Thomas and new recruit Aidan Haughton, he said: “I was encouraged; the players did everything I asked of them.

“Aidan had a good 45 minutes, but was non-existent after half time like most of our front line.

“The forward players are encouraged to rotate and switch positions.

“I asked them to mix things up, which they did. It’s something we’ll get better at with work too.”

Gate headed north up the M6 with a point following the corresponding fixture last season, something Street believes they threatened to do again.

“They had a couple of half-chances caused by our bad habits,” he added.

“If one goes in, it’s panic stations – that could cost us on another day.”
