ROB Doran scored in the last minute to put Prescot through at the expense of FA Cup debutants 1874 Northwich.

There was a sickening sense of déjà vu for the visitors, who conceded a stoppage time goal during Saturday’s first encounter that forced this replay.

Cables progress to play FC United of Manchester at the next stage later this month.

Ian Street’s men, trailing to Doran’s opener after an hour, had seen Matthew Ward’s weak penalty saved by goalkeeper Ciaran Gibson before substitute Josh Crofts levelled with time running out.

With extra time an apparent probability, Doran kept cool to shoot low past 1874 custodian Matthew Conkie following a counter-attack.

In a contest that was more even than its predecessor at the weekend, Northwich started brightly.

Ward and David Short combined to create an opening for Mike Brandon on two occasions, while at the other end Charlie Stoker’s shot was saved by Conkie.

The away team’s net-minder made an aberration shortly afterwards when he fluffed a clearing kick, but Stoker’s resulting effort was off target.

Paul Connor created a chance for Rick Bailey, recalled to the starting line-up in place of Sakeel Abdullah, who shot narrowly wide.

Brandon’s attempt ended the same way following more fine approach play by Connor.

Northwich, shorn of injured front man Matthew Beadle, fell behind on 57 minutes when Doran finished smartly from close range.

Referee Chris Hope then punished a defender for blocking Ward’s drive with an arm, but the midfielder’s spot kick lacked the power to beat Gibson.

Crofts, on for injured Mike Aston, hooked in an equalising goal with three minutes left despite the presence of a pair of Prescot defenders.

1874 pushed forward in search of a winner, but they were caught out at the other end when a swift raid ended with Doran’s decisive shot.
