WINNINGTON Avenue 1994 recovered from the early blow of having a player sent off to beat Barnton Wanderers in their Mid-Cheshire Challenge Cup group-stage opener.

Tom Chubb, twice, and Steve Rowlands were on target for the Cheshire League side in a 3-1 win on Saturday.

Scott Lodge replied for the Crewe and District League champions.

“We stepped up after going down to 10 men,” said Winnington manager Lewis Wood.

“It wasn’t ideal, especially against a side as good as Barnton, but we’re improving each week and earned a deserved reward.”

Winsford Saxons were awarded a victory in the other Group B fixture after Witton Albion’s Development side failed to fulfil.

In Group A, Over 3 Grange came off second-best against higher-ranked Middlewich Town reserves.

Mason Farrell scored the Winsford-based outfit’s goal in a 3-1 defeat.

Clock Tower hammered Winnington Avenue, scoring 13 times, in the other game played last weekend.
