JAMES Coates has agreed to stay at 1874 Northwich following an impressive debut on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old goalkeeper helped his new side to shut out an opponent for the first time this season during a 1-0 win against Litherland REMYCA.

After departing from Trafford he signed principally to stand in for Matthew Green, who was suspended, but will now be at Barton Stadium for longer.

“We’re obviously made up,” said Wayne Goodison, co-manager at 1874.

“James is an experienced guy, and we had an honest conversation in the car on the way home after the game.

“He had really enjoyed himself, and it’s turned out to be a pretty straightforward decision for him.

“I expect him to remain with us for the foreseeable future unless he receives a silly offer from a higher-ranked club.”

Coates made four appearances for Trafford in the Northern Premier League’s West Division before manager Tom Baker recruited former Witton custodian Matt Cooper, who has started the past three games.

He spent time last season with Droylsden, Stalybridge and Ossett Albion.
