Why should I watch..?

To see how new-look sides measure up against each other.

Northwich Victoria have recruited more than a dozen new players following an underwhelming campaign last time out, activity that has persuaded some observers that they can challenge for the North West Counties League Premier Division title.

An encouraging pre-season, which yielded five successive wins following an initial defeat against Lancaster City, has strengthened their case.

West finished 11 points better off than Vics last season, classifying 10th, and have retained the services of prolific striker Tom Bailey.

He scored in both meetings between the teams.

What they’ve said

“You never quite know what you’re going to get from West Didsbury, and that makes them dangerous.

“That’s why it’s important that we look after ourselves, and it’s been made clear to the players that the real business starts now.

“Pre-season has gone well, and we’ve worked hard, but what matters is the next bit.”

Man to keep an eye on

Joel Brownhill

Vics have surrounded Brian Matthews, last season’s leading goal-scorer, with a strong supporting cast after recruiting Rob Doran and Billy Webb.

However it is one of Steve Wilkes’ early signings this summer, former Witton forward Joel Brownhill, who has shone the most during pre-season.

After finding the net on 28 occasions for Ashton Athletic last term, the 26-year-old has forged a reputation as one of the best at this level.

Vics team news

Attacking duo Brian Matthews (ankle) and Billy Webb (groin) are both ruled out by injuries sustained during friendlies.

John Bennett (knee) is a long-term absentee after having surgery, but newcomers Mark Ayres and Ryan Neild are due back from holidays in time for tomorrow’s game.
