RYAN Neild hopes to persuade Northwich Victoria manager Steve Wilkes that he should be first choice in goal when a new season starts next week.

The custodian completed a move from Witton Albion, where he was understudy to Calvin Hare last term, and played against his old club in a friendly on Tuesday.

Vics ran out 2-1 winners, and the 22-year-old produced an impressive performance.

“I want to nail down the number one position and go from there,” said Neild.

“After listening to what the management team had to say, I feel this is the best place for me because they have ambitions that match mine.”

He will be challenged by former Ramsbottom United goalkeeper Danny Taberner, who is back playing again after knee injury sustained in December ended his campaign early last time out.

There are two pre-season matches left for the duo to make their case, starting with a trip to Prestatyn Town this afternoon.

Southport then visit Wincham Park on Wednesday night.

“We’ve signed a good goalkeeper in Ryan,” said Steve Pickup, Wilkes’ number two.

“He’s a great addition, and our goalkeeper coach Rob Sadler speaks highly of his ability after working closely with him in training.”
