GEORGE Hyde will attempt to win a gold medal at the English Schools’ Track and Field Championships for a third successive year next month.

The Sir John Deane’s College student, who left Weaverham High School last summer, won the inter boys’ shot at each of the past two editions.

He moves up to the senior boys’ category this time around.

Holly Weedall, a county champion for both club and school, makes her debut at the event in the junior girls’ 1,500m.

She is joined in Cheshire’s team by fellow Weaverham pupils Charlie Bancroft and Jack England, who contest the junior boys’ shot and hammer respectively.

Grace Roberts, who attends Hartford Church of England High School, will race against Weedall – a teammate at Vale Royal Athletics Club – in the junior girls’ 1,500m.

Sprinter Mia Lowndes (County High School Leftwich) has been rewarded for her victory in the inter girls’ 100m at the county schools’ championships with a place in the squad.

She was a semi-finalist at the nationals two years ago.

Evie Tipping (Grange), like Weedall a Cheshire champion in 2018 for her club and school, will be among the contenders in the inter girls’ hammer.

A contingent from mid Cheshire schools is completed by Emily Lowery (Sir John Deane’s College) in the senior girls’ 800m.

Meanwhile Vale Royal members Ben Lee (senior boys), Holly Smith and Lucy Smith (inter girls’ 1,500m and 3,000m respectively) also appear on the county team’s list.

This year’s English Schools’ Track and Field Championships, held over two days at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, starts on Friday, July 13.
