TOBY Mullins believes Kingsley’s stunning five-wicket victory against Congleton last weekend is proof that his side belong at the Cheshire League’s highest level.

However he warned against getting carried away.

“We followed our worst performance of the season the seven days earlier with our best,” he said.

“It’s important we remember that, and I’ll settle for a dull, middling performance away to Lymm this weekend!”

Kingsley, promoted to Division One for the first time at the end of last season, sit seventh in the table.

They are unbeaten at home to date, winning three of the four games played at the Croft, but have lost every match on the road.

A painful seven-wicket defeat at Port Sunlight when they were skittled for 40 – the first-team’s lowest collective total in a league fixture since 2011 – preceded a heroic effort last Saturday.

Chasing 187 to win, they reached their target in the penultimate over thanks to an unbeaten half-century from Danny Mullins.

“It surprised even me!” said Toby.

“Congleton were unbeaten, and so we knew had to play well – we didn’t have a choice but to put behind us what had happened in the previous game.

“You can understand why our old boys got excited – one of them tweeted it was our best ever result – because of who we were up against.

“Congleton had never been to Kingsley before, and they’ve got guys in their side that have played at a much higher level.

“I don’t think beating them changes our thinking; we’re here to establish ourselves and try to pick up as many points as we can.

“In the space of a week we’ve been to two extremes, but I think that’s normal for a newly-promoted side finding their way.

“We’ll be up and down again.”

Kingsley’s group is a tight-knit one and their overseas signing, Hayden Lanza, is in his second season at the Croft.

The Aussie played an important role in 2017, scoring close to 400 runs in the league at an average of 46.88.

Mullins added: “It’s a settled side, and we know each other inside out.

“A new experience at a higher level has invigorated everybody too and we’re keen to improve.

“It’s a step into the unknown that we’ve taken, but we’re going to give it a good go.

“We’ll know better what we need to do, or where we need to focus, after playing everybody once.

“It can be delicate in that middle part of the season we’ve all taken a look at the other teams and they’ve also studied us, and we’ll strive to stay competitive through that period.”
