WINNINGTON Park are forming a development squad to tempt former players back onto the field.

The team, for under 23s, will play friendly matches against neighbouring clubs when the senior sides are not in action.

“We’ve thought about this a little while,” said Dave Allock, director of rugby at Burrows Hill.

“The past few years have been a challenge, and we had to set up new colts teams after previous ones folded.

“Some of the guys that played for those sides stopped, and haven’t returned to the sport.

“The aim of this new group is to keep in touch with guys that are studying at university as well as offering a way for those old players to get involved again.”

He told the Guardian the under 23s squad would train separately to start with.

If they recruit enough players, then games could be scheduled for midweek or during holiday time when students return home.

Allcock said: “The initial reaction has been encouraging.

“We’re in touch with those guys at Uni, and one or two others that had given up playing have said they’re interested.

“It’s a start, but we’re sure there are plenty of others out there that might want to give it a try.”
