SPEEDWORKS Motorsport, race-winners in the British Touring Car Championship, have announced they will enter a car in the VW Racing Cup for the first time.

The Northwich team will prepare a Polo for Stephen Johansen, who steps up a level following an encouraging campaign in the VAG Trophy during 2016.

They make their debut at home track Oulton Park when the season starts in April.

“Stephen is a talented driver and we’re thrilled to get our hands on the Polo R in what is the UK’s leading series for VWs,” said team principal Christian Dick.

He has been friends with Johansen, managing director at Warrington-based Indigo Technology Sevices, for some time.

The latter, now 48, has enjoyed success in the popular Fun Cup UK endurance series over the past decade.

A switch to the VAG Trophy last year brought with it a best finish of second at Oulton Park.

He also competed in VW Racing Cup rounds at Snetterton and Donington Park.

“I’m ready to make the step up,” he said.

“I’ve known Christian for years and have a great relationship with his Speedworks.

“Speedworks run a tight ship down the road from me in Northwich, so I can keep popping in to mither them!”

The VW Racing Cup is part of a support package for the British GT Championship.

A first meeting for both series is scheduled for the Little Budworth circuit at Easter.
