STEVEN Tames has warned his Witton Albion teammates they can’t afford to take Lincoln United lightly when the teams meet at Wincham Park tomorrow, Saturday.

Carl Macauley’s men won the return 2-1 last month, and the front man told the Guardian he expects a similarly close encounter in the return.

“We’ll need to be on our guard,” he said.

“They’re a big side, physically strong, and the gaffer told us before the first game that we needed to avoid making fouls and giving away free kicks close to our own box.

“We probably did that too often, and found ourselves under pressure. Lincoln have the players to punish us if we make the same mistakes.”

The Whites arrive in town buoyed by winning each of their past three matches in the Northern Premier League’s Division One South, including a 3-1 success at Stamford in midweek.

They have a perfect record during February, and striker Jack McGovern has been on target in each of those victories.

However Witton, beaten on home turf for the first time this season against Warrington in the Cheshire FA Senior Cup on Tuesday, will be determined to keep the pressure on Shaw Lane at the table’s summit.

The leaders are due in Northwich on Tuesday, but Tames – whose loan stay from Stalybridge Celtic has been extended until the end of April – insists Albion won’t be distracted.

He added: “We need to win on Saturday, first.

“The gaffer won’t let our minds wander – he’s very much focused on the next game.

“There’s still 19 of them to play, so that seems sensible.”
