GREG Mairs has his sights set on completing a hat-trick of wins at the BUCS Nationals when he takes to the court with mixed doubles partner Jenny Moore this weekend.

The pairing have taken the title in each of the past two years, and a third would mark a fitting end to the left-handed Northwich ace’s time representing Loughborough University.

First, Moore must pass a fitness test after sitting out the end of the National League campaign with an injury.

“If she’s fit, then we should be good to win the mixed doubles again,” said the 22-year-old, who graduates from a sports management degree later this year.

“I can call it now that if we reach the final then we’ll probably face Matt Clare and Viki Williams, another Loughborough duo.

“We played them in 2016 and won, so hopefully we can do the same again.”

The BUCS Nationals attracts more than 6,000 students from across the country to Sheffield for a three-day multi-sport event.

And the former Sir John Deane’s College student has fond memories of taking part.

He added: “I love BUCS because for people who didn’t carry on playing to a high level, they can still play and enjoy it at university.

“You get to meet so many people, and it’s a lot less intense than before.

“It used to be a 128-pair draw and you were shattered by the end.

“It’s so good when you win the title, because it improves your confidence and it’s a prestigious competition at university level.”

This year’s edition starts on Friday.

British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) is the national governing body for Higher Education (HE) sport in the UK, organising leagues and competitions for more than 150 institutions across 52 different sports.
