WITTON Albion have confirmed full-back Matty Devine has agreed terms on a deal until the end of next season.

The 23-year-old, who signed from Burscough last summer, has been among the most impressive performers for Carl Macauley’s side this term.

He’s proved reliable too; only defender Michael Wilson has started more matches in all competitions.

“This is a player I firmly believe has a bright future in the game,” said Macauley.

“We’re delighted with the progress he’s made, even though we knew we were bringing in somebody who possesses a lot of quality.”

The former Marine youth team player has attracted the attention of higher-ranked clubs, according to chairman Mark Harris.

He said: “Matty is one of our best assets, and we value him as such.

“We’re happy he’s committed to us by signing a contract, because it’s with guys like him that we have a chance of realising our ambition of getting promoted again.”

Devine is expected to return to Witton’s starting line-up for this afternoon’s Northern Premier League encounter with Gresley.

He sat out a 1-1 draw with Northwich Victoria on Boxing Day while he served a suspension as punishment for his dismissal during an FA Trophy replay reverse at Chester last month.
