JANUARY brings an exciting new year... and an exciting new publication date for the Guardian .

From January 5, your favourite local newspaper will be switching from a Wednesday morning to a Thursday morning.

Editor Carla Flynn said: “The change of publication date will enable the editorial team to bring readers a greater variety of up-to- the-minute news.

“For many years we have been ‘putting the papers to the bed’ on Tuesdays which means that sometimes we haven’t been able to include certain events.

“The switch to a Thursday, for example, will help us to improve our coverage of important council meetings which take place on Monday and Tuesdays.

“It will also help us improve our sports coverage as we will now be able to report on Tuesday night matches.”

Research indicates that most people like to buy their local newspaper on Thursdays.

It was more than 160 years ago that the Guardian started serving the towns of mid Cheshire.

A lot has changed over the years - especially with the internet and social media - but one thing remains the same - a passionate team of journalists who are dedicated to the towns they serve.

The mid Cheshire Guardian has six reporters covering Northwich, Winsford and Middlewich, Knutsford, Wilmslow and Crewe and Nantwich.

And as well as publishing a weekly print edition, each town also has a website, Facebook page and Twitter account.

And with modern technology, you’re just as likely to see a reporter with an iPad these days as you are a notebook and pen.

As the Guardian moves to a new publication date in January, we thought we’d share a quick ‘behind the scenes’ glimpse of how the team put together your favourite local newspaper.

For the mid Cheshire team, the working week starts as soon as that week’s paper has been ‘put to bed’ - then it’s full steam ahead on the following week’s edition.

While the websites are updated straight away with any breaking news, journalists are also working on a range of stories at any one time. From chasing up a tip-off by a reader to covering a council meeting, no two days are ever the same for reporters.

The editor and deputy editor work closely with the reporters and colleagues in advertising and it is their job to plan the papers, put the pages together and ensure that each title hits its press slot.

Everything is done electronically and completed pages are sent to Newsquest’s printing press in Glasgow and that’s where our dedicated newspaper sales team come in.

Drivers will be ready to collect Mid Cheshire titles on a Wednesday evening as soon as they are printed and ensure they are back in the north west that night.

The van carrying the papers is scheduled to leave Glasgow by 6.30pm for the four hour journey to the warehouse based in Blackburn.

From there, nine vans are loaded and leave after midnight for night delivery to retailers and distributors.

More than 90 deliverers (from children aged 13 to adults) are employed by the Guardian across mid Cheshire and Knutsford, plus the service offered by Sheldons Dairy which delivers more than 1,000 copies to homes in the area.

The Guardian delivers direct to around 470 Knutsford customers and 2,400 mid Cheshire customers for a morning delivery.
