1874 NORTHWICH paid the penalty for not converting any of the numerous chances they created, and crashed out of the Macron Cup as a result.

Instead Silsden progressed thanks to Nicholas McNally’s goal in the first half of extra time.

By then Ian Street’s side had been reduced to nine men following the dismissals of defenders Paul Connor and Danny Thomas, the latter after conceding a spot kick that led to the home team’s winner.

The visitors should have been out of sight by then.

Goalkeeper Callum Jakolevs was kept busy in the first half, producing fine saves to thwart Sam Hare, Sam Hind and Ryan Jackson.

The second period followed a similar pattern, although the lower-ranked home team posed more of a threat on the counter.

1874 custodian Greg Hall had to be alert to save at McNally’s feet, and he was also equal to a pair of long-range attempts from Dan Riley.

At the other end Hind’s attempt was cleared off the line by a back-marker, and Thomas’ header from a corner was blocked in the same way.

Mark Jones, standing in as captain in Matthew Woolley’s absence, headed inches over the bar from another set-piece.

Substitute Scott McGowan scooped high following fine approach play by fellow replacement Joe Woolley, while Tyler Edwards was inches from reaching the latter’s cross on the slide.

Connor was then sent off on 80 minutes as punishment for aiming a petulant kick at an opponent after appealing for a foul.

Silsden almost scored at the start of extra time when Leon Smith drilled off-target, while Joe Woolley’s drive was beaten clear by Jakovlevs.

The contest’s decisive moment followed when Josh Eastwood sprinted on to a through-ball, a run that was halted by Thomas’ intervention on the edge of the penalty area.

Referee Conor Brown judged the contact to have taken place inside, and showed a red card to the 1874 man.

McNally’s kick struck an upright, but he was first to the rebound to convert from close range.

Jack Woolley, after replacing injured brother Joe, was denied by a deflection before full-back Matthew Russell’s burst ended with a shot that lacked power.

McGowan again lifted high, while Jakolevs made a final intervention when saving Tom Bailey’s header.
