LEOPARDS, the Mid-Cheshire Super League’s reigning champions, have surprised their rivals by announcing their resignation from this season’s edition.

A 7-3 reverse against Wreckers last Tuesday, a first defeat of the campaign, was their final game.

They say they do not have enough players continue.

“Due to a variety of circumstances, including job relocations and commitments in other competitions, Leopards decided to reluctantly withdraw,” said a league spokesman.

“It’s a real blow, because they have set the standard in recent years.”

Their remaining players can sign for other teams.

However Mid-Cheshire’s representative team, which plays in the Lancashire and Cheshire League, faces an uncertain future.

With Leopards’ results scrubbed from the standings, Tigers have taken over top spot in the first qualifying group following a 7-3 success against second-placed Raptors.

Victoria, runners-up last term, whitewashed Blades.

In Group Two, Hawks’ lead is worth four points despite a 6-4 defeat at Sticklebacks.

Mark Lafferty was the victors’ star turn, winning each of his three singles matches.
