AS they had done a fortnight earlier, Winnington Park saw off visitors that arrived at Burrows Hill as league leaders.

It’s not a bad habit to have.

More importantly, a fourth home win this season closes a gap between Roger Pickering’s men and the table’s summit – now occupied by Dukinfield.

And Park’s head coach believes there is still plenty of room for improvement.

He said: “It was another Jekyll and Hyde performance.

“At times, the guys were excellent and produced some fantastic flowing rugby. They also made simple errors.

“If we can cut those out, we’ll be difficult to stop.”

Player-coach Ian Moriarty powered over from a ruck to put the first points on the board, leaving fly-half Cameron Flanagan to add the extras.

Liverpool, who completed a double over Winnington last season, restored parity with a converted score of their own before the break.

The hosts started the second half brightly, and took the lead when Josh Gibbins collected a loose ball before inviting Jack Williams to race the length of the flank to score.

Flanagan’s conversion followed.

Park’s third try was the game’s highlight, full-back Chris Sheppard marching over the line unopposed after slick handling and textbook support play had set Josh Brown free.

He then sent Lee Allmark into space before Sheppard applied a finishing flourish.

Captain Dave Cross dotted down next to secure a bonus point, a try improved by Flanagan who then landed a penalty to make it 29-7.

However a poor clearance after the restart gifted Collegiate a try and, after the visitors added a converted score moments later, Park’s lead felt flimsy.

They held on to it though.
