WOMEN are rekindling a passion for netball thanks to a new initiative from Northwich Sapphires.

The club’s Nice ‘n Easy sessions, aimed at players returning to the game after a break as well as those who haven’t stepped onto a court previously, are continuing to attract newcomers.

They spend time every Tuesday evening at Rudheath Leisure Centre with Sapphires coach Jan Turley, who teaches them basic skills before the hour ends with a friendly match.

“It’s brilliant fun,” said Lynn Bell, who attended an initial run that started in April.

“There is such a mix of people, from girls in their 20s to those in their sixties, like I am.”

The latest edition started earlier this month.

Players, who pay £5 per session, must be aged 15 or above.

“I’d not played for more than 30 years, but was keen to start again when my daughter joined the club,” said Verity Bowcock.

“I like the mix of experience and ages; it’s a great stress reliever to be playing sport and laughing along at the same time.

“Apart from getting fit, I’ve enjoyed getting back into netball again.

“Jan gets us to work on one element, then we put it into practice during a relaxed match.”

Lauren Watson, who heads Sapphires’ committee, told the Guardian she is happy with how the programme has been received so far.

She added: “We weren’t sure what to expect, and it's early days yet, but the age range of those who’ve come along has been a nice surprise.”
