ROMELLO Nangle scored deep into stoppage time to condemn Witton to a first league defeat of the campaign on Saturday.

If that didn’t make Albion feel bad enough, the fact they surrendered a two-goal against opponents with only one win in seven previous attempts will.

Carl Macauley, without front man Rob Hopley, paired teenagers George Miller – signed on a month-long loan from Bury on Friday – and Tolani Omotola in attack.

It worked, for both were on target for the visitors.

Miller fired narrowly wide early on, while Kieron Walker cleared off the line after Omotola skipped around goalkeeper Jack Steggles.

At the other end, Carlton captain Danny Gordon prompted custodian Danny Roberts to save smartly before sending his next attempt – from Josh Rae’s assist – against an upright.

Albion survived a scare on 33 minutes when Nangle, with the goal at his mercy after taking the ball away from Roberts, seemed to stumble as he nudged the ball onto a post.

They inflicted maximum punishment shortly afterwards when Miller finished smartly.

Omotola doubled Witton’s lead on 58 minutes, prodding in from close range.

When Eddie Schoenecker blasted in a reply, after Rae’s shot had been blocked, Carlton began their recovery.

Steggles redeemed himself for a poor clearance when he denied Tom Owens, a save that proved crucial when Nangle fired with power past Roberts at his near post after sprinting clear of his marker.

Matty Devine smuggled Walker’s header off the line as the Millers pushed for a winner, which duly arrived when Nangle – a former junior at nearby Notts County – converted emphatically again after Witton failed to clear Gordon’s corner.
