EMILY Martin, from Weaver Valley Cycling Club, was the fastest woman among more than 80 finishers in the Withington Wheelers 10 on Saturday.

She stopped the clock on 25.59, a new personal best, to take first prize in her category.

There was a victory too for Alan Shuttleworth, timing 29.01 on his trike.

Weaver Valley’s contingent also included Andy Woolley, riding a first open 10-mile time trial since 1993, who completed the course at Monks Heath in 26.11.

Stuart Ward, a novice at the event, posted 24.10, while Ewart Howkins was quickest of those in his club’s colours in 24.05.

Velotik Racing Team rider David Crawley was fastest overall, well ahead of runner-up Jonathan Gildea (Seamons CC) with a time of 20.18.

Jack Schofield (Bath CC) was third in 21.03.

Dave Fearon, Alistair Stanway and Jim Williams combined to break a Weaver Valley record, unbeaten for more than 30 years, during the West Cheshire Time Trial Association’s 12-hour race.

Together they covered 702.5 miles to beat the previous marker, 702.44, by the narrowest of margins.

The event incorporated the club championships, with Fearon (247.42), Stanway (227.76) and Williams (227.32) finishing in that order as individuals.

Victor Chetta (Mid Shropshire Wheelers) took overall honours with 282.66 miles, an average of 23.5mph.
