NORTHWICH Rowing Club can add more names to a list of rowers that have been selected to represent their country.

Rhys Coffey and George Crouchley, who took silver in the under 18s boys’ double sculls final at the British Junior Championships on Sunday, will race in England’s colours this weekend.

A reward for their performance on the national stage is to take part in the Home International Regatta at Cardiff.

It marks a third successive year Northwich will be represented at the annual event.

Coffey and Crouchley were second fastest during a time trial over a 1,500m course on Saturday, stopping the clock at 5.47.9.

A victory in their semi final followed before they trailed outstanding Claires Court duo Jonathan Cameron and Alex Richardson to the line in Sunday’s A final.

Three more Northwich boats contested finals.

Lucy Gillbanks qualified for the under 18s girls’ single sculls showcase after finishing second in her semi final behind eventual gold-medallist Katy McDonald (Durham University).

She was fourth in the final.

Meanwhile Kevin Dudley took fifth in the under 18s boys’ single sculls final.

A new combination in the under 18s boys’ junior quad sculls, with Dudley joining Matthew Radford, Greg Murphy and Matthew Roberts on board, ranked sixth.

They battled testing conditions at the National Water Sports Centre on Saturday, when strong winds prompted officials to halted racing briefly in the afternoon, to take third in an eliminator.

“To see our home-grown talent doing so well on the national stage at the end of an incredibly tough season is testament to the commitment of our athletes and their trainers,” said coach Rachel Hooper.

“We’ve again shown as a club we have real depth to our squads, and we’re excited about what they can go on to achieve next.”

Charlotte Almond and Rachel Cooney classified 10th overall in the under 15s girls’ double sculls after finishing fourth in the B final.

In the under 18s girls’ double sculls, Jess Swindells and Abbie Davies narrowly missed out on a semi-finals place after ranking 15th in Saturday’s time trial.

Anya George and Hannah Cooney were close behind, also inside the top 20.

The fastest 12 crews progressed.

Meanwhile Leon Langmead, who represented Northwich at last year’s Henley Royal Regatta, was a medal-winner in Croatia at the weekend.

The former Sir John Deane’s College student was part of a men’s quad from Durham University that claimed silver at the European University Games.

Alex Fisher, James Vogel and Ben Weston completed the line-up.
