ALAN Kemp was Weaver Valley Cycling Club’s sole representative in the Charlie Betteley Memorial Road Race at Swynnerton on Sunday.

He was part of a high-quality field, consisting of the best veteran riders from across the region, that started a 50-mile race.

Alan Forrester (Graham Weigh Race Team) rode away from the bunch on the first hill, establishing a break that stayed clear of his rivals for the remainder.

Kemp worked with fellow competitors to reel in those that tried to catch the leaders, finishing sixth overall – second in his age category – following a 400m uphill sprint to the finish-line.

Weaver Valley members, including Kemp, took part in the opening round of the club’s Oulton Park Road Race series on Tuesday.

He was fourth in the over 60s race, which was won by Steve Jolley (Omnipex Bioracer), while Kevan Underhill, Nick Butterworth, Mark Adshead and Stuart Ward contested a bunch sprint in the over 50s category.

Roy Holmes (Bott Cycle Team) was first to finish.

Among the under 50s, track world champion Lee Suthard switched to the road for the first time in two decades.

He was caught by the bunch in the final stages of a race that included Iain Young, Jim Duffy and Matt Ellis.

Chris Spencer (Omnipex Bioracer) was fastest of the over 40s in the field, while Ryan Pike (High On Bikes) took first prize in the under 40s class.
