MATTHEW Robinson heads to Donington Park this weekend hoping he continues to surprise his rivals in the British SuperKart Championship.

A novice in the series' 125cc class in his maiden season, he celebrated a second-place finish in the opening race at Snetterton last time out.

After scoring points in each of the six sprints to date, the 21-year-old sits fourth in the standings ahead of the biggest meeting of the campaign.

"This will be his toughest test yet," said dad Graham.

"Matt has progressed tremendously well given his inexperience, and has kept pace with seasoned champions so far.

"It's been a huge learning curve for him.

"The first race at Snetterton was the most competitive he's ever been involved in, but I think he surprised a few people to finish second."

Robinson is using a chassis with which Lee Harpham, currently top of the drivers' table, secured the title last term.

The Rudheath-based racer showed promise on his debut at Silverstone, setting the third fastest time during qualifying.

He narrowly missed out on a podium place, finishing fourth in the opening race - a feat he repeated in the second too.

Graham said: "No novice had ever done that.

"He came home with the third biggest points total of the day."

Robinson, a former student at Sir John Deane's College now at Lancaster University, has previously won Cheshire Kart Racing Club titles.

The British SuperKart Grand Prix meeting at Donington Park is a two-day event, starting on Saturday.

Admission for adults is £17 on the gate.
