GEORGE Lawton, from Northwich Rowing Club, has been selected for Great Britain’s team at this weekend’s International Junior Regatta.

The teenager is part of an eight-strong sculling squad for the annual event in Munich, which attracts close to 2,000 young rowers from across the world.

It marks a second time the Sir John Deane’s College student will race for Britain abroad after returning from last year’s Coupe de la Jeunesse, in Hungary, with a silver medal.

Rory Harris (Pangbourne College), his partner in a men’s double at Szeged, has travelled to Germany too.

The 33-strong line-up was decided after a series of trials for juniors that featured hundreds of rowers.

At the GB Rowing Team’s junior regatta last month, Lawton finished second in the men’s single scull A final behind reigning world champion Josh Armstrong.

Robin Dowell, lead coach for the British junior team, said: “[Team manager] John Layng and I were pleased with what we saw.

“It was great to look at new and exciting combinations of athletes within the system, and to challenge them to step up to a world-class level of performance.”

Great Britain won four medals at last year’s International Junior Regatta in Munich; silver for both the men’s and women’s quads, plus bronze for the women’s double and men’s eight.
