THREE Weaver Valley Cycling Club members contested the opening round of the Dave Astles Memorial Road Race series last Tuesday.

Kevan Underhill crossed the line second in his age category after completing a course around Siddington in wet, cold conditions.

Iain Young was sixth in class after responding well with challenging accelerations from his rivals, while Jim Duffy finished with the bunch in his race.

Duffy also competed in the Stafford and Stone Race Series 48 hours earlier, held over four laps of a 10-mile circuit south of Audlem.

He rode home a few seconds ahead of the bunch after breaking away with another rider to classify in 13th overall, fourth in his age category.

Four Weaver Valley riders took part in the latest Manchester and District Ladies’ Cycling Association 10, in which Caroline Fearon (27.57) was pipped to the finish post by clubmate Emily Martin (27.16).

Vanessa Whitefield, who rides for The Racing Chance Foundation, covered a course near Monks Heath in 24.33 to secure victory by 15 seconds from Claire Harrison (Vision Racing).

Karen Popplewell was third for Seamons CC, 18 seconds adrift.
