WINSFORD Saxons caused an upset by beating higher-ranked Cuddington in a dramatic Mid-Cheshire District FA Challenge Cup final on Saturday.

The Crewe and District League side ensured they finished their inaugural season with silverware when they saw off Cheshire League opponents thanks to a last-gasp Robbie Hatton winner at Lostock Gralam.

They took the lead on 15 minutes when former Cuddy front man Steven Hughes latched onto a through-ball and calmly slipped the ball past goalkeeper Tom Wilson.

However Cuddington responded well, and equalised 10 minutes later through an unstoppable long-range effort from Josh Mainwaring.

The Northwich side then took control, and Adam Bettley’s curler put them in front.

Saxons set about their task in the second half, but found it tough to break down Mike Harwood’s men.

However they did find a leveller on 75 minutes when Dean Mundy diverted home a free kick to equalise.

Extra-time looked the most likely outcome until a champagne moment deep into injury-time when Hatton found the net to ensure the trophy returned with Saxons to Winsford.

They clinched the Crewe and District League title last night, Wednesday, when Stephen Osborne's goal earned them a point they required from a draw with Crewe FC reserves

A treble remains possible too.
