DANNY Andrews’ first-half double gave Witton Albion victory at Trafford, ending a six-match losing sequence in the Northern Premier League.

He fired the visitors in front inside eight minutes, then converted a penalty to establish a two-goal lead by the break.

Despite an improved display in the second period, which yielded a goal from substitute Dimitri Tuanzebe, the home team could not pinch a point.

Carl Macauley’s men stay 16th in the table, but move six points clear of the relegation zone after registering a first win in Division One North since October 10.

They took the lead when Andrews drilled through a crowd of players after Trafford’s defence failed to clear a corner.

A second goal might have followed after goalkeeper Russ Saunders fluffed a clearance, but one did arrive on 28 minutes when referee Robert Sherwood spotted a push by Danny Caldecott on Andrews.

And the wide man duly increased his goal tally for the season to 13 from the resulting spot kick.

Jack Dorney shot too close to Witton custodian Andrew Firth when he had a glimpse of goal at the other end, then Jamie Matthews chipped off target with only Saunders to beat before half time.

Tuanzebe replaced former Albion striker Ashley Stott at the interval, and sounded a warning when he volleyed wide.

Trafford’s appeals for a penalty of their own fell on deaf ears when Simon Woodford went sprawling in the box before they halved their arrears though the substitute on 62 minutes.

Albion continued to pose a threat in attack, with in-form winger Jamie Menagh twice going close to restoring a two-goal advantage.

However the visitors breathed a sigh of relief when another replacement, Sam Noah, directed a header against the crossbar with time running out.

Witton, whose starting line-up included four teenagers, held on to win for the second time at Shawe View this term – the first occasion an FA Cup preliminary round encounter back in August.

They attempt to record back-to-back league wins for the first time since the opening week of the campaign when struggling Scarborough Athletic visit this Saturday.
