MATTHEW Langridge progressed to the World Rowing Championships final on Thursday, securing a spot for his boat at next summer’s Olympic Games as a reward.

The Northwich rower, along with crewmate James Foad, was a victor for Great Britain in the second semi final of the men’s pair in France.

They trailed their rivals during the early stages, but recovered to establish a slender lead by halfway.

That advantage, over Australia – silver medallists at the world under 23s championships – and the Netherlands had increased to a boat-length after 1,500m.

And the gap remained the same until the finish, with Langridge and Foad winning in 6.27.48.

The duo, crowned Europe’s best in May, will have a chance to avenge defeat in last year’s world championships final when they face defending world and Olympic champions New Zealand on Saturday.

The Kiwi crew, consisting of Eric Murray and Hamish Bond, were comfortable winners in the first semi final at Lake Aiguebelette.

They have not lost a race since 2009, and scored a success against the British combination in their only meeting this season at a world cup regatta in Lucerne.

Saturday’s final, to be broadcast live by BBC Sport, is scheduled for 12.30pm.
