DAVENHAM made it three successive victories at the expense of local rivals Weaverham on Saturday.

The hosts won by six runs and continued to move away from the drop zone in Division One.

Weaverham, now sitting one place above Saturday’s hosts, had got the better of Davenham on the opening day but Mark Greaves won the toss and decided to bat on a decent track.

He and Tim Niemand set out to start as they had the previous week, but Weaverham’s Kevin Waterhouse bowled the skipper for 1.

This brought Hunt to the wicket and he and Niemand set about the Weaverham attack.

It came as a shock when South African Niemand was caught for 42 at mid off in a partnership worth 92.

Ben Gough joined Hunt, who passed 50 for the third time in the league this year.

As the opening attack was replaced by Rob McMillan and Wilden Cornwall runs appeared to be harder to come by but through aggressive running the Davenham pair were able to put pressure on the Weaverham fielders.

As Hunt looked set to record is first 100 in Davenham colours it was again a shock as he mistimed a drive to be well caught at backward point.

Cornwall eventually took 3-61 from his 16 overs, with Davenham finishing on 203-6.

The hosts set about taking the required 10 wickets and with Robin Taylor and Dean Jackson they were able to exert early pressure.

Weaverham wickets fell early with Russell Walker, Alex Nash and Waterhouse all going.

This brought danger men Cornwall and Matt Jamiesom to the crease as Cornwall looked to punish anything remotely off line while Jamieson was looking to manufacturer some scoring shots.

But Greaves read the situation as he brilliantly covered the ground to his left, took off, sticking his left hand out and snaffling the prized wicket of the Weaverham overseas.

The next few wickets were removed without much trouble, but Weaverham still only required five an over.

The last wicket partnership of Ian Eaton (35) and Kevin Douglas (48) took Weaverham to within seven runs of winning the game.

That was until the reintroduction of Taylor, who delivered the critical blow. Taylor ran in, bowled, pitching on middle with Eaton confident of having it covered until the ball nipped away, hitting the top of off stump.

Jackson ended with 6-84 and Taylor 2-71.

Davenham travel to Cheadle Hulme on Saturday, while Weaverham host Timperley.
