WEAVER Valley Cycling Club members made an impression in the latest round of The League International’s Cheshire Road Race Series.

A strong wind made conditions difficult on the exposed stretches of the Lower Withington course, with riders completing a 30-mile distance over five laps.

In the over 55s race, Alan Kemp finished third after joining an early break that stayed away from the bunch.

Jim Duffy, among the over 40s, missed a chance to do the same before making a burst the penultimate lap to claim a creditable fourth place.

The series’ fourth round was scheduled for last night, Tuesday.

Kemp ended the week as an age-category winner in the League of Veteran Racing Cyclists’ (LVRC) National Road Race Championships.

The Weaver Valley member was part of a break of 11 riders that formed early on, the group working together to keep the rest of the field at bay for the remainder of a 57-mile distance on a circuit north of York.

Two competitors were left behind during the closing stages before the remaining nine contested an uphill drag sprint to the finish with Kemp crossing the line ahead of Don Parry and Richard Booth.

A group of seven Weaver Valley Cycling Club riders took part in the latest Borderland Challenge on Saturday, a 22-mile off-road event for mountain bikes.

Tim Rutherford was the fastest in a 96-strong field, completing a course through the Berwyn Mountains, in north Wales, in a time of 1:56.

Clubmate Eleanor Underhill ranked second among the female entrants, clocking 2:45.
