JIM Gannon has urged his players not to be downbeat despite missing out on promotion following a play-off semi-final defeat.

Teenage substitute Regan Linney scored a decisive goal for Bamber Bridge during the second period of extra time on Tuesday night, securing a 2-1 victory.

It means Vics will play a fourth successive season in non-league’s fourth tier next term.

“The team was desperately disappointed afterwards as it feels like the season was a failure,” said Gannon.

“It’s always hard to take, but more so in a game of such importance.

“I’ve reminded them of what they’ve achieved this season, and there is a lot to be proud of.

“When the dust settles, we can turn then our attention to the great experience we’ve gained.

“We’ve made significant progress from last season, and if we stay strong and do something similar again, I’m sure we’ll feel much better come this stage of next season.”

Vics trailed at the break last Tuesday after Jon Macken, left unmarked at the far post, steered in ex-Northwich attacker Darren Green’s cross with his head.

Substitute Richie Bennett restored parity for the visitors with a quarter of an hour left, meeting Chris Smalley’s assist from the right with an emphatic finish.

Linney, only introduced moments earlier, then kept calm to stroke in a winner for Brig with five minutes left.

Gannon said: “We matched them, and for periods we dominated.

“Unfortunately we didn’t capitalise by taking our chances.

“Both teams gave everything and it’s a shame that in such circumstances that one has to lose.”

He closed by saying he wanted to be at the helm for next season, when Northwich will host opponents at Witton Albion’s Wincham Park home.

“I’d be both pleased and proud to continue,” he said.
