MIDDLEWICH recorded a first victory of the season in style on Saturday, overwhelming Tattenhall by 122 runs at Haddon Field.

After being put in, they posted 216-8 with skipper Nick Gill (53 off 65 balls) reaching a half-century after Jamie Williams (46) and Richard Clorley (28) had shared a partnership further up the batting order.

Kristian Clowes (40 off 28 balls) made a rapid contribution late on in the innings.

Tatters were dismissed for 94 in reply, with Stuart Price taking 4-0 from five maiden overs for the hosts.

Sam Brothers (3-33) chipped in too.

Davenham recovered from an opening day derby defeat at Weaverham with a 38-run success against Cheadle Hulme at Butcher’s Stile.

They totalled 185 after deciding to bat first, with Jay Cartlidge (36), Sam Hunt (33), Ben Gough (26) and Tim Niemand (25) all making starts.

Rana Malook took 5-57 for the visitors.

They mustered only 137 in reply, with Gough (5-48) leading the attack and Dan Hancock (3-23) claiming the key wicket of Malook (28).

Before the match, both teams observed a two-minute silence to mark the death of Davenham president Colin Jones.

“This victory is in memory of Colin who coached a number of our current first-team regulars,” said skipper Mark Greaves.

“I’m sure he would have been proud of the way we played.”

Weaverham were denied by the weather a chance of recording a second win, losing 10 overs to rain in their head-to-head with Timperley.

Their hosts’ stubborn tail-enders played a part too, resisting the Russets’ attempts to dismiss them as they closed on 135-9.

Mike Clarke (4-39) and Wilden Cornwall (3-41) were the pick of the Weaverham attack.

Earlier, they had hammered 252-9 with Russ Walker (82) in a stand worth 99 runs for the fourth wicket.

James Lewis (55 off 49 balls) and Matt Jamieson (31) played a part too, while Chris Page (4-56) was the successful of Timperley’s bowlers.

In Division Two, Northwich fell to a five-wicket defeat at home to Widnes.

Teenager Sam Stoneley (89 off 74 deliveries) was in fine form for the home team at Moss Farm, with Ashley Sefton (24) the next highest scorer in their total of 169.

Chris Kirby (57no) led the visitors to victory at 170-5, after Sam Shepherd (2-75) removed both of their opening batsmen at the start of the innings.
