MATTHEW Langridge demonstrated his adaptability during a successful trial for Great Britain’s senior team at the weekend.

The Northwich rower had been due to race in the men’s pair at Caversham, only to switch to a single at the last minute after partner James Foad suffered a broken foot.

The duo had won a silver medal together at last year’s world championship.

Langridge, representing Leander Club, was fifth fastest during a time trial on Saturday morning, completing 2,000m in 7:33.18.

The 31-year-old then secured a place in the final after finishing third in Sunday’s second semi.

The men’s single final, won by Leander clubmate Charles Cousins for the third year in a row, saw Langridge again classify fifth.

“I haven’t seen Matt so feisty in the single for a very long time and that’s good to see,” said David Tanner, GB Rowing team’s performance director.

Former Northwich Rowing Club member Alex Bain, in Newcastle University colours, was 16th fastest in the time trial for singles – fifth among entrants eligible for the under 23s team.

Emily Ford, a former captain at Grange School Rowing Club, was a victor on Sunday in the B final of the women’s pair.

Also a student at Newcastle University, she was in a boat with Sam Courty of Bath University.

Meanwhile Tom Ford, another to have raced for Grange School previously, came home second with Tim Clarke in the C final of the men’s pair.
