Liverpool St Helens 19 Winnington Park 24

WINNINGTON Park kept their hunt for a top-four finish alive by completing an impressive double over promotion-hopefuls Liverpool St Helens.

They are the first team to win a league match at Moss Lane this season.

The hosts took an early lead through Phil Kearns after applying pressure to Park’s defence, converted by Mark Potter, but their guests’ speedy backline posed a constant threat.

After a selling a dummy, Lee Allmark dived over for their first try.

They took the lead shortly afterwards, this time when Harry Stubbs picked up the ball from the back of a scrum and crossed from close range.

Jack Williams converted.

LSH restored parity though after Park prop Shaun Underdown had been sent to the sin bin, forward Mark Fryer applying the finishing touch to a strong drive following a lineout.

Stubbs and then Craig Lamb received yellow cards in quick succession after the interval, but it did not deter Winnington.

They claimed a third try following a mistake close to their own line by the hosts, Jack Williams finding Allmark who sent in Fraser Lindsay.

Mark Warr’s men extended their lead following a quickly-taken tap penalty by scrum half Chris Heptinstall, who popped off the ball to a charging Underdown.

He touched down, converted by Lindsay, to make it 24-12.

LSH fought back, scoring a third try with five minutes left when Mario Bonati went over.

Potter’s conversion closed the gap to five points, but they could not find a way through Park’s defence again.
