COUNCILLORS say they support a plan to convert the swimming pool building at Moss Farm to a space for gymnasts.

Cllr Stuart Parker, portfolio holder for culture and economy on Cheshire West and Chester Council’s executive group, has unveiled an artist’s impression of how the facility – opened in 1990 after baths at Victoria Road closed – could look in the future.

He said: “We have always been clear that we regard Moss Farm as one of our flagship sites, and that we’re committed to its redevelopment once the pool is decommissioned.

“We feel the gymnastics proposal would bring exciting new opportunities for all young people and adults, while at the same time complementing the outdoor sports already played there.

“It’s important to stress that the process is at concept stage.

“We’re working with Cheshire Gymnastics to develop their idea, and expect to be in a position to explore funding opportunities shortly.”

Sam Naylor, chairman of Northwich Rugby Club as well as a ward councillor for Winnington and Castle, is in favour of the proposal too.

Indeed Blacks are one of the teams who train, and play home matches, at Moss Farm.

He said: “The user group, of which I am a member, has been calling for some time for other sports or clubs to be based there.

“The gymnastics proposal is an exciting one.”

Naylor hopes the plans will reinforce Moss Farm as a hub for sport in the area.

“Not only would it give the former pool hall a new lease of life, but it would cement Moss Farm’s reputation as a place for sport too,” he added.
