Prescot Cables 2 Northwich Victoria 3

WATCHING Northwich Victoria return to the top of the table was not enough for manager Jim Gannon – he wants them to go out and “express the skills they have”.

His side fought back from 2-1 down to win on Saturday thanks to goals from Gary Burnett, Godwin Abadaki and an added-time effort from Richie Bennett.

With previous leaders Salford slipping up at Brighouse, Vics now occupy first place in Division One North.

But Gannon wants now to see a more enjoyable brand of football from the Flixton-based outfit.

“It may be a bizarre statement to make when we’re top of the league but there’s still a lot of improvement to be made,” said the Vics boss.

“I told the players I want to search for ways to get better – to play a more rewarding game of football that helps them express the skills they have.”

Prescot reached the interval a goal up after Jack Phillips fired home, but were pegged back soon afterwards by Burnett’s finish.

Vics slipped behind again to a James Edgar effort before Abadaki stabbed home a leveller seven minutes from time.

With 93 minutes on the clock, the visitors pinched the points when Bennett blasted into the net with virtually the last kick of the contest.

“The demands on some of the players have been tough and they will need to work through this period to recover their best form,” added Gannon.

“We want to achieve success, but I am mindful too that an enjoyable environment and being part of a successful team is also valuable and should be cherished by everybody.”

Vics, due at Ramsbottom for a rearranged Doodson Sport Cup clash last night, Tuesday, travel to Ossett Town this weekend.

Vics: Smith (GK), Smalley, Ali, Clarke, Henry, Cook, Summerskill, Roddy (Sanogo 46, Harries 73), Burnett, Bennett (Meadowcroft 90) Abadaki. Subs not used: Sherratt, McCoy.

Attendance: 184.
