BOXING fans are being urged to cheer on local club members at a major tournament tomorrow at the Lostock Sports and Social Club in Works Lane.

The event is being staged by the Boxing Fit Academy, and is due to feature between 10 and 12 bouts of three, two-minute rounds.

The Academy has 10 members, who train at Lostock Youth Club, and is run by Martin Dunwoody and Frank Collins, who formed the club in 2011.

Four of the club members are due to compete at the tournament – accountant John Harrison from Winnington, concreter Ryan Dingle from Weaverham, window cleaner Lee Tomlinson from Lostock and Joshua Quinn from Winsford, who has just left the Army.

The bouts range from middleweight to light heavyweight, and the evening starts at 6.30pm.

“This is the first major event we have held, and the atmosphere on the night is going to be electric,” said Martin.

“We believe we have the best venue in the area, and the boxers are going to come out to music and smoke.

“We are inviting people to come along and cheer the boxers on, and the aim of the tournament is to encourage people to join the club.

“This is a big community event for Lostock and Northwich.”

Julia Tickridge, the Labour Parliamentary candidate for Weaver Vale, is due to present the trophies after each bout, and there will be a raffle in aid of cancer research.

Tickets are £15 for seats, standing tickets are £12, and people can pay on the door.

Martin said his long-term aim was to get involved with schools and cadet organisations, and through GP surgeries, to work with people to offer opportunities to tackle weight issues.

The club is seeking to attract more members, in particular young people and women, and would welcome any donations of equipment. For more information visit boxingfit-cheshire.co.uk.
