TONY Sullivan believes an FA Trophy win today against Workington can lift his side’s spirits, but his priority remains picking up points in the league.

Albion will celebrate back-to-back victories for the first time in more than two months if they can beat Reds to reach the third qualifying round.

“Is it good to be distracted from the league by a cup game? No,” said the Witton manager.

“I don’t think I’ve ever felt as low as I did after last Saturday’s game, so I want to put that right as quickly as possible.

“That doesn’t mean playing Workington isn’t important, because it is.

“The players have a chance to give to our supporters a gift of being in the draw for the next round on Monday. Our fans deserve that.

“I’m also looking for us to prove we can be consistent and put back-to-back performances together.

“The conditions during the first half against Kidsgrove in midweek were terrible, but we recovered to play well after that and scored goals.”

Three of his forwards – Alex Titchiner, Jamie Rainford and Jamie Henders – were on target in Tuesday’s 4-1 win.

Sullivan also experimented in defence, where Sam Barnes, Ben Harrison and John Shaw played together for the first time.

He added: “The signs were promising, and we’ve got to be able to mix things up and not have only one game-plan.

“It takes time to work on things like that, and we’ll continue to do so in training.

“We saw the Alex Titchiner we want to see in midweek – it was like having a new signing!

“He’s a crowd-pleaser, and when he plays like that he can get people out of their seats.

“It’s not his fault we are where we are, but he feels it more because of the relationship he has with the club.

“Jamie [Rainford] needed a goal too – he’s an experienced player at this level, and knows he needs to start taking more of the chances we’re creating for him.

“The pair of them lives and breathes for scoring goals, and I think they can do playing together.”
