LUCY Burgess attempts to win a medal at the World Under 23s Championships in Italy later today after her crew won their heat on Wednesday.

The Northwich Rowing Club member was part of a Great Britain’s women’s quad scull that led from start to finish, holding off the challenge of New Zealand in the final 500m.

Mathilda Hogdkins-Byrne, Holly Nixon and Jo Wratten joined Burgess, at stroke, in the boat as they clocked 6:31.60 in Varese.

Russia won the second heat ahead of Poland in 6:32.910.

Germany and defending champions Romania complete the line-up for the final, scheduled for 4.15pm.

Meanwhile Ed Grisedale, who was at Northwich when he represented Great Britain at the World Junior Championships in 2011, races in the men’s eight final on, Sunday.

Former Grange School student Tom Ford, of Newcastle University Boat Club, is in the same crew.

They were third in their heat on Thursday, but reserved a place in the final after winning a repechage in 5:36.14 yesterday, Friday.

A strong second half to the 2,000m contest helped them to victory ahead of hosts Italy and Poland.

They will be back on the water again at 2pm tomorrow.
