DANIEL Nixon, who lifted the Roberts Bakery Cup for the first time last month, targets another personal milestone in the Guardian Cup final this Friday.

The Wharton Cons man is among the most in-form bowlers in an eight-strong field that includes five former champions.

He insists he won’t be daunted.

“The Guardian Cup is one I’d love to win,” he said.

“I’ve played at finals night four times, but never managed to get over the line.”

Nixon rates his win in the Roberts among his finest achievements.

He meets Mark Cookson, from Rudheath, in the quarter finals at Moulton RBL on Friday, from 6.45pm.

If he wins, then clubmate – and close friend – Tom Vickers or 2006 winner Rob Winnington (Castle Private) await in the semi finals.

“I’ve lost to Tom in the Guardian Cup previously, so I’m due to beat him,” added Nixon.

“Ask any bowler and they’ll say the same – we hate playing against our friends or teammates. If it happens, this will be no different.”

In the other half of the draw, Comberbach’s John Gurney has been paired with Castle Private’s Jason Cornes – the latter a four-time previous winner.

The victor of their head-to-head could meet the competition’s most decorated player, Glynn Cookson, in the semi finals.

The Wharton Cons star has emerged as victor from 10 previous finals.

Chris Koral, of Owley Wood, provides the opposition for him at a green on which he lost to son Simon at the same stage last year.
