DEBUTANT Mark Wakefield continued to make progress during the latest round of the MINI Challenge UK series at Oulton Park, his home circuit, on Saturday.

The teenager qualified seventh fastest in the Cooper class for rookies, climbing to fourth by the opening race’s first corner before scoring a sixth place finish by the flag.

He ended the second sprint in the same position before starting the day’s third race from pole position in his category.

The 16-year-old was involved in a battle to be on the podium, only to fall back following contact with a rival.

A 10-second time penalty as punishment for his part in the incident left him seventh in an amended classification afterwards.

“Mark did a great job,” said dad Nigel.

“I was stood among spectators at Old Hall corner, and I could hear them willing him on every time he went past.

“That was amazing.”

Both Nigel and Mark thank Manchester-based Barrow-Mix Ltd for the company’s support during the meeting.
