Former Winsford United defender Shaun Came joins Rob Byrne's managerial team at Barton Stadium
ROB Byrne reckons former fans’ favourite Shaun Came’s addition to the management team at Winsford United will be one of his signings of the summer.
The former Manchester United reserve team regular, who also played as a professional for Macclesfield Town, takes over as first team coach at Barton Stadium.
“Shaun is a local lad who has had an immediate impact in the changing room,” said Byrne.
“He’s working on improving the squad’s fitness while maintaining the technical aspects of training that the players enjoy.”
Blues kick off the new campaign next month in the North West Counties League’s top flight at home to Colne.
It is a contest during which the hosts will count on a number of new names.
Former Oldham apprentice Kyle Riley, right back Alex Byrne and experienced midfielder Gavin Ellison have all switched from Premier Division rivals from Glossop North End, where ex-Winsford manager Chris Willcock picks the team.
Matthew Tierney, also a midfielder, has arrived from FC United of Manchester.
“Kyle is a big strong striker who leads the line well,” said Byrne.
“He’s intelligent with his movement, with a terrific touch for a big lad.
“Matty was released from Manchester City and has since gone on to play for Mossley and Salford as well as FC United.
“Alex was with Bury, and made his debut for Mossley when he was 16. He also helped Abbey Hey to promotion the season before last.
“Gavin is a central midfielder who brings with him a wealth of knowledge from his time on professional contracts.”
Byrne confirmed too that Ellison will skipper his side this term.
Of last season’s squad, goalkeeper Andy Jones has agreed to stay.
Attacking pair Dennis Sherriff and Osebi Abadaki have done the same, along with Dale Jennings, Michael Jones, Davison Banda and Tom Clarke.
Blues continued their preparations for the new season with a 3-1 defeat at Wythenshaw Amateurs in a friendly on Saturday.
Before that, they had shared four goals with league newcomers Barnton last Tuesday.
