POCKETS Snooker Club turns 30 this week, though its members are already celebrating one of their best seasons to date.

The Winsford venue can boast of success across five different sports – darts, dominoes, football, pool and snooker – as it prepares to enter a fourth decade on Jubilee Way.

“We’re still going strong,” said owner Martin Morgan.

“This year, our 30th anniversary, has been great across the board.”

Pockets’ footballers finished first in the Mid Cheshire Sunday League’s Premier Division for the fourth year running, adding a third successive victory in the League Cup final too.

Meanwhile the club’s pool players ended a maiden campaign in the Middlewich and District League as champions.

They added the Team Knockout title, while Stewart Colcough claimed the singles prize.

In dominoes, Pockets won a double of Winsford League and Team Knockout.

They shared top spot with Fern Villa in the Winsford Ladies Darts League after both teams were tied on points and also on legs won.

Pockets B were runners-up in the men’s competition.

There was success too in the Mid Cheshire Snooker League, with Pockets C second overall behind champions Owley Wood A in the Premier Division.

They were victors against Middlewich Legion D in the Team Knockout final, while Colclough won the Clare Cup before joining forces with Richard Proctor and Craig Winslow to win the Owley Wood Three-Man competition.

All in the club’s anniversary year.

“When we opened in 1984 the price of a pint of beer was 70p while a litre of petrol set you back 40p,” said Morgan.

“And we have members still here who were using the club back then.

“Dads of our younger ones played for teams based here and, in some cases, their granddads.

“Pockets has always been a part of the community, and aside from our passion for sport we’ve raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years.”
